Dr. Emma Dargie, C.Psych.
Dr. Dargie takes a client-centered, evidence-based, sex-positive, 2SLGBTQ+ positive approach to assessment and psychotherapy. She is warm, enthusiastic, and collaborative. Dr. Dargie works closely with clients to establish goals, discover patterns that are linked to difficulties, and determine what approach might work best to help them meet their goals.
Dr. Dargie provides individual and couple therapy to English-speaking adults experiencing a wide variety of challenges and circumstances. In addition to working with general mental health concerns (e.g., mood, anxiety, stress management), her main areas of practice are sexual health, couple therapy, reproductive mental health, working with sexual and gender minorities, and donor conception (both for families using donor gametes/embryos as well as supporting adult donor conceived persons). Indeed, she provides Implications Counselling to those wishing to use donor sperm/eggs/embryos and/or surrogates to build their family. Finally, she provides support to those with gender dysphoria who wish to take (further) steps in their transition and need a letter from a psychologist.
Dr. Dargie’s primary theoretical orientation integrates Sex Therapy techniques with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). She also uses tools from other orientations such as dialectical behaviour therapy, schema therapy, and mindfulness.
Dr. Dargie is also passionate about providing education, consultation, and supervision to other mental health professionals (e.g., practicum students, interns, supervised practice psychologists, autonomously practitioners) about sexual health, relationship functioning, and working with those who identify as sexual and gender minorities. She is a Clinical Professor with the School of Psychology at the University of Ottawa, an invited speaker, and the recipient of the Excellence in Clinical Supervision award from the University of Ottawa’s School of Psychology. Please see the GPS pages for example workshops/talks and supervision options. Dr. Dargie often has junior colleagues under her supervision, so if her caseload is full, prospective clients may be able to access care from one of her supervisees.
Dr. Dargie completed her undergraduate studies, M.Sc., and Ph.D. at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, and her clinical psychology residency through Vancouver Coastal Health Authority in British Columbia. Both programs are accredited by the Canadian Psychological Association. Dr. Dargie also trained as a sex and couples therapist at the Sex Therapy Service at Queen’s University, at Vancouver General Hospital, and at BC Women’s Hospital. Dr. Dargie is a published academic author, and recipient of multiple academic awards, such as a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship administered by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. She has conducted research about the assessment and diagnosis of chronic vulvar pain, romantic relationships, gender identities, and sexual orientations.
Dr. Dargie is a member of the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario (CPBAO), the Ontario Psychological Association (OPA), the Ottawa Academy of Psychologists (OAP), the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), the Society for Sex Therapy and Research (SSTAR), the Canadian Andrology and Fertility Society, and the World Professional Association for Transgender Health. She regularly attends workshops, conferences, talks, and peer consultation meetings to expand her skills and knowledge.
