Tributes to Former Colleagues

Dr. Peter Judge

Psychologist

Gilmour Psychological Services® was incredibly fortunate to have Dr. Peter Judge join the group in 1992 until June 2023. Peter is an exceptional psychologist, combining his skill and knowledge as a clinical psychologist and a neuropsychologist. While nowadays, Clinical Neuropsychologists are more numerous, Peter was a pioneer in the field. His clinical training and awareness informed and enriched his neuropsychology work. Most significantly, Peter is an amicable, approachable, calm, and generous person who is a most competent, ethical professional.

We were also lucky to have Peter, who understood the ethics and standards under which psychologists’ function in Canada, advise us about our computer needs. Over the years, Peter helped to develop our Customer Relations Management (i.e. Clients) system to manage the referral process for our 23 or more psychologists, as well as training our administration staff.

Professionally, Peter provides third party client rehabilitation services with Expert assessments and reports, and Expert Testimony in court. He receives referrals largely from rehabilitation brokers and the legal community (both Plaintiff and Defence) with respect to personal injury, auto insurance, and long-term disability claims.

Peter received his Ph.D. in Psychology/Neuropsychology from Carleton University in Ottawa. He completed postdoctoral training in Clinical Psychology/Neuropsychology at York University and The Clark Institute of Psychiatry (now CAMH). He is registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario with proficiencies in Clinical Neuropsychology, Clinical Psychology and Rehabilitation Psychology.

Peter is also certified to conduct Catastrophic Evaluations under the SABS [CAT-C (MB} and holds a Certification in Medical-Legal Expertise (CMLE-O). A complete Curriculum Vitae can be requested by phone or email, as listed below.

Currently, Peter does not offer services to private individuals. However, he is available to offer services to third parties and the legal community. He can be reached at:

Dr. Paul Basevitz

Psychologist

Dr. Paul Basevitz first joined Gilmour Psychological Services® in 2005, and worked with our group through until the summer of 2021. Dr. Basevitz approached all aspects of his involvement here at GPS with a notably enthusiastic energy, both in his interactions with his clients, and also with all of his GPS colleagues. We will all miss his kind and caring demeanour, and his ever-present smile.

Dr Basevitz worked with individual adults throughout his time here at GPS, providing psychological services to those who presented with a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety disorders, depression, interpersonal problems, life transitions, and low self-esteem. Dr. Basevitz always had a special interest in helping those who presented with a variety of anxiety conditions, and worked collaboratively and determinedly with his clients to develop treatment goals and individually tailored interventions. His therapeutic orientation was best described as cognitive-behavioural (CBT), through which he would help his clients identify obstacles that stood in the way of achieving their personal goals, and then he would help them to learn new, more effective approaches to problem solving. Dr. Basevitz also helped his clients achieve a better understanding of themselves and of their emotional experiences.

Dr Basevitz completed his undergraduate Psychology Honours BA at the University of Ottawa, and all of his graduate training, MA and PhD, in Clinical Psychology from Concordia University in Montreal. Early in his training, Dr. Basevitz provided services to clients in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, and also at the Center for Psychological Services at the University of Ottawa. He also worked for 2 years at the Royal Ottawa Hospital before coming to join us in 2005. We have been most fortunate to have Dr Basevitz as part of our group of Psychologists for these past 16 years.

Dr. Basevitz has been a constant supporter of the profession of Psychology, serving as President of the Ottawa Academy of Psychology, supervising doctoral students in Clinical Psychology at the University of Ottawa’s Center for Psychological Services, and co-leading a mentorship group for licensing year psychologists.

We have all appreciated Dr. Basevitz’ continuing dedication to, and passion for, the Practice of Clinical Psychology. And we know that his countless clients over the years have been the fortunate beneficiaries of his dedication.

Dr Paul Basevitz is now providing psychological services to adults at Centerpointe Professional Services, 98 Centerpointe Dr., Nepean, K2G 6B1. He can be reached by phone at 613-291-4774.

Dr. Doreen Gough

Psychologist

Dr. Doreen Gough first joined Gilmour Psychological Services® (GPS) for her supervised practice year in 1991, and continued with us after she was fully certified in 1992. She retired from practice in January 2021.

Doreen has served as a business partner since 1992 when the five women business partners formalized their partnership. Over the years as GPS grew and the demands of overseeing the business-end of the large group practice increased, Doreen’s energy, wisdom and active support of the work of the partnership was boundless. She made significant commitments and contributions to the development of our perspective, values and business practice. She also oversaw our administration staff with skill and kindness.

Doreen came to psychology after earning her Bachelors of Mathematics, and working for eight years with the Centre for Remote Sensing. She earned her Honours Bachelors of Arts in Psychology from Carleton University and her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Ottawa. She worked in Ottawa University’s Centre for Psychological Services and at the Royal Ottawa Hospital (now ROMHC) before joining GPS.

Additionally, Doreen had an active and busy clinical practice, offering psychotherapy to adults both individually, and in past years, in psychodynamic groups. Her graduate studies’ research had focused on trauma victims, and her practice reflected that interest. She offered psychotherapy to clients who had experienced accidents, criminal attack or war trauma, crises, medical problems, posttraumatic stress disorder, survival of sexual abuse, and suicidality. Doreen also treated anxiety and depression, burn-out, attachment and adjustment disorders, grief, personality disorders, infertility, sexual disorders and substance abuse problems.

Doreen’s therapeutic approach was an Integrative one, using thoughts, emotions, memories and sometimes dreams to address and resolve distressing symptoms and behaviours. Always in collaboration with her client, she helped to mend the parts of the client’s underlying personality and previous life experiences that caused the client’s symptoms. She held that change comes about through the analysis of the underlying factors together with the resolution of current issues in the client’s life.

Doreen’s gentle humour, deep insights, empathy and kind commitment to her clients have been repeatedly remarked upon by those who were helped by her over the years. It is not an exaggeration to say that she helped several thousand clients over the thirty years of her private practice.

Clarita Robinson
(AKA: Amalia Clara Lucia Robinson De Torres)

Administration

Clarita joined us as an administration staff at Gilmour Psychological Services® In September, 2017. She had many years of professional experience and brought her proficient professional skill, rapid learning capabilities, excellent attention to detail, and warm and elegant style and grace. We enjoyed her terrific sense of humour and her ability to solve any problem. She was one of the most positive people we have ever met.

Although Clarita was a private person, we did learn how adventurous she was. As a young schoolgirl in Colombia, she loved to race her grandfather’s horses on his ranch, much to the consternation of the adults. She left home to go to a boarding school in Montreal where she perfected her English and also learned French to add to her mother tongue of Spanish.  Over the years she married, had three sons and five grandchildren, and lived in many countries in addition to Colombia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. We also learned that she won many Toast Masters competitions and was active member for most of her adult life.

With great sadness, we lost Clarita when she passed away on December 14, 2019, after her valiant and always optimistic year of cancer treatment. We continue to miss her greatly. It was a privilege to know her and her memory lives on with us all.

Dr. Sandy Ages

Psychologist

Dr. Sandy Ages joined Gilmour Psychological Services® in 1994 and we have been fortunate to have her as a colleague and friend for twenty-five years. Sandy retired in August, 2019.

Over the course of her work with us, Sandy provided individual therapy to children, adolescents and adults. Her practice focused on parent-child communication, parenting styles and skills, family transitions such as separation and divorce or bereavement, problem solving and conflict resolution. Sandy also provided psychotherapy for clients with histories of trauma and helped clients understand how their pasts lived on into the present, and how to free themselves from the past.

Sandy used an Integrative psychotherapy approach including Behavioural, Cognitive Behavioural, and Humanistic Therapies, and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing for trauma). Sandy always tailored the psychotherapeutic approach to the needs of her clients.

Sandy also was a partner in the computer-testing agency developed with Dr. Iris Jackson and Dr. Alex Weinberger in 1998. Together, they offered testing services to other psychologists and spent eight years screening RCMP candidates. Sandy retired from that service in 2006.

Sandy earned her B.Sc. degree in psychology from McGill University and her Masters degree from the University of Toronto. She earned her Ph.D. in Psychology from Carleton University, focusing her research on child sexual abuse intervention and prevention. She worked with two local school boards, a local private school, two psychiatric children’s outpatient departments, and a local youth service agency, before joining Gilmour Psychological Services®.

Sandy has always been an enthusiastic, committed and proficient psychologist. She has had a wonderful career, and a myriad of people and their families have had their lives improved by her care.

Ms. Agnes Kidd

Administrative Staff

Agnes Kidd worked with Gilmour Psychological Services® in the front office as administrative staff for twenty-four years. We were fortunate that she joined us in December of 1993 and that she stayed steadily and steadfastly with us until September, 2017.

Agnes was a remarkable key member of our organization. She had an amazing capacity to learn quickly, to pay attention to detail and to easily comprehend the complexity of the range and volume of work presented to our administration staff. Her computer and technical skills evolved with our equipment, and she conscientiously worked to finish projects and not leave work undone. Her professionalism was second to none.

Agnes has great emotional intelligence and wisdom. She understood the sensitive nature of the work, the importance of confidentiality and how she and the other administrative staff were often the first representatives of GPS with whom clients would interact. Agnes was empathetic without crossing boundaries, supportive without being intrusive and kind and informative without exceeding her role. She was a master at the symbolic, small gestures of hospitality, welcoming clients to GPS. Agnes always made a conscientious effort to respond to client’s requests for help with respect, care and timely action.

Agnes is a fascinating person. Originally from Argentina, she speaks flawless English and Spanish. As many of us know, Argentina is a very psychologically minded country with one psychologist for every four people. Psychoanalysis thrives in Argentina and the populace as a whole is very accepting and knowledgeable about psychological issues. Therefore, it is not surprising that Agnes fit so well in the role of supporting the psychologists at GPS. Agnes is also a world traveller, having been to forty-eight countries and planning to see more. Her usual trips are walking tours, and her next trip is to Portugal. She said that she is also planning to read widely and to stay as informed about world events as ever. We know that Agnes will enjoy her retirement with the same cheerful enthusiasm that she greeted all the other phases of her life. We have been so lucky to have had these years with her.

Dr. Frances Smyth

Psychologist

Dr. Smyth has been a psychologist in our group since 1985 and she has served as a business partner since 1992 when the five women partners of Gilmour Psychological Services® formalized their partnership. She retired from general clinical practice at the end of 2017 and retired from conducting Child Custody and Access Assessments at the end of 2018.

In addition to her private practice clinical work, Fran has also worked with the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre (psychologist, Coordinator of the Children’s Psychological Service, and Acting Director of the Psychology Department) and the Children’s Aid Society. She has also taught graduate psychology courses at the University of Ottawa.

Fran has seen individual adults, adolescents, children, and families in assessments, psychotherapy and counselling. She has had a special interest in the children and adults from dysfunctional families and a widely acknowledged proficiency in helping children with the changes and problems that arise when parents have substance abuse issues, high-conflict divorce situations, and the loss or death of relatives. She also worked with individuals and families dealing with sexual orientation issues.

Given the wide range of her work and the numbers of children she has helped, it is no surprise to learn that after the children grow up to be mothers and fathers, when they or their children need help, they again seek out Fran who saw them in their own formative years. Thus, Fran has had the joy and the opportunity to continue to help ongoing generations of clients.

Fran’s assessment work has included Psycho-educational assessments, Learning Disabilities assessments, Psychodiagnostic Assessments, and Child Custody and Access Assessments.

Fran has always been an enthusiastic, hard working and proficient psychologist, who is well-respected by her colleagues. She has had a stellar career, and we at GPS have been fortunate to have her as a colleague and contributor to the guidance of the partnership.
