Workshop Overview
Inclusivity in the Therapy Room: An Evidence-Based Approach to Working with Sexual and Gender Minority Clients
This workshop provides psychotherapists with a trauma-informed, culturally humble, and affirmative framework for supporting sexual and gender minorities (SGM). We combine didactic teaching with case examples and practical tools/suggestions for addressing common challenges and capitalizing on client strengths. We may also review specific pathways that gender minorities might take to help their bodies/appearance better align with their identities, and the role that psychotherapists can play in that process (as requested).
Workshop Details
This session provides a practical overview of an affirmative, trauma-informed framework for supporting sexual and gender minority clients, including key considerations around historical contexts, intersectional experiences, and acknowledging personal biases. We also explore client strengths and protective factors, relevant social science research, and practical strategies for adapting your current clinical practices to overcome common roadblocks in therapy.
